Yesterday as I was watering my garden i saw a rogue onion growing in one of my empty boxes. I had cleared that box a week earlier because the on ions were not getting any bigger and the garlic seemed done. However I noticed some little black bugs on the onion and i just sprayed them away. I went over to the next box where my green onions have grown out of control and noticed they were also covered with black bugs and lots of them.
I sprayed them away but noticed they came back quickly and i think a few jumped on me. At that point i was having the heebie-jeebies of insects crawling on me... so i went and got my husband for a second opinion. We took a look at them and then went and did some research. I am not sure if they were flea Beetles or black aphids. They did jump a little.. but no book says they would hang out on onions. I did not see any leaf damage but according to the books, any larvae would be in the roots and in the leaves no matter what, so we pulled out all the green onions and three red onions that i was growing there. Very sad. The other onions located with the tomatoes see to be pest free at the moment. I hope these guys go away now. We killed a whole bunch by stepping on them and they make a purplish stain on the wood. I think that corner gets to wet and does not dry fast enough- it sits next to a wall.
On the other hand, I am going to try to keep a tally of vegetables from my garden.
Today i picked 5 strawberries and threw out 2- as they were half eaten by birds or bugs.
Saturday i picked a zucchini and squash to eat along with some mint.
Previously i had picked one sqaush and gave to my parents
Also another zucchini and another squash and ate half and gave the other half to my sister-in-law. I have been using the mint from the garden. i got about 6 bulbs of garlic and 6 small onions. Tomatoes should be coming in soon. i will try to plant some more this weekend in my two empty boxes.
